Heralds, five plate etching with spitbite and burnished aquatint, 8" x 10", 2025

In Threshold, Liv Johnson presents a series of etchings exploring spaces defined by permeable barriers. Continuous movement is redirected by interlocking planes that flip, fold, reverse and repeat. These transitions are reflected in the process of printing etchings as the preliminary sketch is flipped onto the plate and then experienced, as a reversal in the copper matrix. The image becomes normalized in this reversed form as the plate is worked for a period of time. It can be disorienting when, during printing, it is inked, flipped once more, and embossed into paper.

Johnson’s recent body of work explores the destabilizing effect of landscapes and interiors becoming alien. The uncanny environment is a statement on changing relationships with surroundings. Previous modes of measurement and definition become inadequate; solid demarcations become membranes enabling transitions. The dimensions of natural and man-made features alike are in flux as they approach the pinnacle in which transformative action can be manifested.

Johnson earned her BA in Art at the University of Hawaii at Hilo and her MFA in Studio Art with an emphasis in Printmaking and Sculpture at Texas Tech University. She now lives in Houston where she is Printmaking Department Head for the Glassell Studio School at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.
